How did you become a mycologist?

I’m interested in biology and possibly studying something like fungi in the future.

How did you get into mycology?

Was it something you always knew you wanted to do, or did you discover it later?

For me, it wasn’t something I planned from the beginning.

I started broadly in biology and became interested in environmental science. During a course, I was introduced to fungi and realized how central they are to processes like decomposition and nutrient cycling.

From there, I pursued research opportunities and eventually focused on fungi in graduate school.

If you’re interested, I would recommend:

  • Taking general biology courses first
  • Looking for research or field opportunities
  • Paying attention to what kinds of questions you find yourself asking
